How much is a pack of smokes in your area....? Just curious.....I've never even had a cig in my life....but I'm amused listening to smokers say they are gonna quit because of high prices but they just keep on buying them and smoking!

Re: smoking or non smoking |
I live in Tell's neck of the woods. Packs of cigs only went up around $.75 to $5 to maybe 7 bucks dependending on your brand. My American Spirit rolling tobacco doubele to $10 a pouch and almost 30 for a tin. I have an Indian store close by here and it's not much cheaper, 10% maybe...
Girlfriend won't let me quit... says the shock to my system would probably kill me quicker than the smoking!

Re: smoking or non smoking |
At least 5 dollars per pack in Colorado. Fed taxes just upped the cost by about 75 cents a pack. Funny how all those cig taxes - meant to offset the cost of smokers' health issues due to smoking - actually went into the state coffers instead. So now we have the nicotine-addicted, poor, unhealthier people paying for things like roads, parks, and other crap in states' budgets.
This is what is total bullshit. The smoking bans in bars and restaurants were primarily designed to protect the health of employees and their patrons - not to discriminate against smokers. Also funny tho, how I have to walk thru gauntlet after gauntlet of smokers' groups outside all these places as I daily hike around the perimeter of the 'hood. And the people living above these outfits, in NYC for example, have to deal w/ all the 2nd-hand smoke wafting up and into their apt windows.

In Albuquerque, Mex weed goes for $40 per ounce there. Colo has mostly hi-end smoke, $40 to $55 an 1/8. Getting a permit was the best I've done in years.
Cigs were 25 cents a pack when I was a kid (10 years old). Gasoline was 28 cents a gallon. I started smokin' that shit when I was 14. Quit maybe 5 or 10 times: several times for one year, and once for 3 years, but I always started up again. Haven't smoked a butt in 12 years. Quit cold-turkey is how to do it. When you're jonesing for a cig, light up a bowl of smoke instead. Take a couple of real good hits. Make sure to burn your throat a little bit. You won't want to smoke a cig right away, after that. Then, repeat this method. IT WORKS!

In Canada it's $10 a pack. But here in Ontario you can buy smokes from the Indian Reserves, they are $11 a carton!! You should almost start smoking for being that cheap!

Re: smoking or non smoking |
I smoke American Spirits which are a bit more expensive. In my area (Boston) they are $9.70 a pack/ $97.00 a carton.
However, I travel to NH a couple of times a week for work and get a carton there for $53.00 which breaks down to $5.30 a pack.
It is time to quit.

Been rolling my own since 1980. Smoke a brand called Three Castles and very similar to the Golden Virginia cubes you buy in pubs. Before April 1. One pound of bulk tobacco cost about $19 (400 cigarettes). Last week the tax on bulk tobacco just went from one dollar per pound to almost $25 per pound. Pretty much does away with the cost advantage over pack smokes.

Re: smoking or non smoking |
Not to do anything half way, a carton of premium brand smokes can be had for 30 bucks in South Carolina. There's an additional fed tax coming this way this summer that will probably add another 8 bucks per carton.
The social demonizing of tobacco is another thing altogether. Even my wife, who is very anti-smoking voted against the referendum on outlawing smoking in bars and restaurants. Once the politically correct elitists find out they have the power to infringe on anyone's rights, it will never stop. (Her thoughts)
Which inevitably leads to this question, anybody try to purchase ammunition in bulk lately?

Re: smoking or non smoking |
In the back of my brain,I seem to recall Mark Twain saying quittin smokin was easy, he'd done it a hundred times. Last time I went to see the doc he asked me when I started smoking cigs. Eight years old when you could buy a packet of five Wild Wooly Woodbines for 10 1/2d old English pennies. About a nickel Stateside maybe.
As I sit here after several mugs of tea, smokin a rollup cigarette (not my first) I too resent the cost. We export it abroad and then buy it contraband in our own pubs, where it costs half the price of the store but because of the smokin ban you have to stand outside to have a cig. Ya see groups of grown men huddled in the doorways, in the winter, cos they can't smoke and drink a beer at the same time. The hourly rate of the minimum wage won't even buy ya two pints. Oh no I'm ranting again.
When we were kids, we used to collect cig packets. Yankee smokes were valued, Luckies, Camels, Pall Mall, Kent. In England my favourite was Passing Cloud, which I recall had a colour picture of the Laughing Cavalier on the front. Also liked Sweet Afton, with the Robbie Burns poem on the back.
These days I still like non-filter Players, Senior Service, Gitanes,Gauloise, Park Drive but usually smoke Golden Virginia. Take me back to Old Virginia. Used to work on a tobacco farm .
I consider Ohio my home state and as I drank my first tea of the day I was singin "no stems no seeds that you don't need.
Put that in yer pipe and smoke it.

Re: smoking or non smoking |
Here in St. Louis it's around 5 bucks a pack. For years I've smoked American Spirit roll-yer-own, pouches went for around $3.75, tins for around 12 bucks. Now pouches are about 8 bucks, tins something like 25-30 bucks. What other product can be taxed to double it's price in a day and people not go completely crazy? Try doing that to the poison sold at McDonald's and Burger King and see how well it goes over.
I'm basically quitting now myself. I can't smoke discount brands and otherwise cannot stand the flavor of anything but American Spirit. I'm currently filling a Dugout with American Spirit tobacco and taking one-hits. Yeah, it looks a little funny in public, but hey, that's what the things were made for in the first place, right?

Yeah, ironic that they "count" on huge funding stream for things to do with child health care and education via these taxes!
Think if we could tax masturbation for 12-22 yr old males...National Debt-Smedt.
We'd be rolling in it in no time.
Hmmm, if they shut down the forum, they could even add all of us to the revenue generating stream (pun intended).

I've always wondered about that, how do you go about getting a tobacco plant to grow at home, are you even "legally" allowed? is it like having your own still or whatnot for alcohol?
